The soft pastels with high oil content are perfect for painting techniques such as streaking and blending, in which the applied pastel is smeared with a sponge. This allows smooth transitions between different colors. Pastels are also recommended for the scratch technique, for which several colors are applied in layers, then the details are scratched out, such as with a wooden stick, so that the colors underneath are visible. Oil pastels are somewhat similar to wax crayons, but are much softer and smudge more easily, allowing you to create images with soft gradients. They are also similar to dry pastel crayons, from which they differ only in their oil content. The oil makes the crayons dust-free and water-resistant.
