Keith Haring was not only an influential artist who was inspired by New York, but also an activist, fighting against the prejudice, ignorance and hypocrisy of American society.

The young Haring saturated his imagination with cartoons by Charles M. Schulz, Disney and Dr. Seuss. He redrew Mickey Mouse, Proto Cat and characters from "Fistas". However, with the encouragement of his amateur engineer-drawer father, he tried to create his own characters and forge his own style. From a paperboy he longed to become a cartoonist. Keith Haring penetrated the underground world of the metropolis. He succumbed to the fascination of New York, which he made the canvas for his art.
