Caran d’Ache is renowned for producing top-quality art supplies, and in 2008, they introduced the Luminance 6901 line of premium pencils. These pencils feature a creamy texture, permanent pigment, and maximum lightfastness in accordance with the ASTM D-6901 standard, which classifies artistic pencils based on light resistance. The 3.8 mm core is wax-based, allowing for multiple layering and smooth color blending, making it easy to achieve beautiful shading and gradients. Crafted from cedar wood, the pencils sharpen easily and are coated with several layers of clear, water-based lacquer that is non-toxic and environmentally friendly.

The Luminance pencils are housed in a high-quality oak wooden case, with silk-screened branding both inside and out. The case features gold metal clasp closures and contains four removable wooden trays, each holding 28 pencils cushioned by foam lining to protect them.
