Brand history

In the early 2000s, artists Bernadette Ward and Ladd Forsline envisioned a new kind of art medium—a dry pigment that would retain the characteristics of pastels but behave like paint. Inspired by the long history of raw pigment use and the enduring stick format of traditional pastels, they sought to create a material that combined the immediacy and purity of pastel color with the fluidity of paint.

In 2005, they founded Colorfin LLC, and after five years of research and development, perfected a unique production process that pressed pure pastel pigment into a flat pan format—thus, PanPastel® was born and introduced to the world in 2007. They also developed Sofft® Tools, a range of specially designed micropore sponge applicators that allowed PanPastel colors to be applied like paint. For the first time, artists could blend and mix dry pastel colors seamlessly, with minimal dust and maximum control.
