Kremer brand natural pigments are used in the arts in a variety of ways due to their unique aesthetic and chemical properties. They are excellent for the restoration and conservation of monuments, fine art painting and handicrafts.
Kremer is a family-owned business located in Aichstetten, Germany that has been in existence since 1984. What was originally a grain mill was converted into a pigment mill, which now houses Kremer Pigment's production facilities. Kremer uses the river flowing past the mill to convert hydropower into electricity.
The pigments are obtained exclusively from natural raw materials such as rocks, minerals, metal oxides and salts. Carefully selected, top-quality raw materials from all over the world are carefully processed, initially ground by hand, sifted and then ground to a very fine powder. Pigments were created based on color recipes from centuries past. Production is done by hand.
In painting, natural pigments play a crucial role. They are used in creating watercolors, oil paints, tempera paints, acrylic paints, gouaches or inks. Art conservators and restorers use natural pigments to preserve the authenticity of restored pieces. Pigments are also used to create frescoes, by applying pigments to wet plaster, they allow the pigment to deeply bind to the substrate and the colors to last.
Natural pigments are widely used in dyeing fabrics, to which they impart rich or subtle hues, ideal for dyeing silk, cotton or linen. In ceramics, pigments can be added to clay or used as glazes, which imparts durable and vibrant colors after firing. In glassmaking, pigments are added to molten glass to produce colorful products. Natural pigments are also used to decorate objects such as sculptures and wooden musical instruments.
Natural pigments are prized for their durability and the beauty of their colors. Their use requires in-depth knowledge of the techniques and properties of individual pigments, making them a versatile artistic tool with endless possibilities.
