Roman Szmal Art is a Polish brand specializing in the production of professional art materials, created with deep respect for tradition and craftsmanship. At the heart of the company’s portfolio are the renowned Aquarius watercolors — exceptional, high-quality paints designed for artists who seek vibrant, lightfast, and expressive colors. Aquarius watercolors are available in full pans measuring 27 × 15 × 8 mm.

The line includes 214 colors, all made exclusively from 100% natural pigments, without the use of synthetic substitutes. Each paint is bound with gum arabic and natural honey, which helps maintain moisture and ensures long-lasting freshness.

An impressive 174 colors are single-pigment, providing superior clarity, predictable mixing, and smooth application on paper. The set also includes 49 earth colors, created by grinding natural rocks — completely free from synthetic iron oxides. Among the range are 8 quinacridones and several unique granulating shades rarely found in other watercolor collections. The palette is complemented by distinctive proprietary colors such as Aquarius Yellow, Aquarius Red, Aquarius Green, and Aquarius Black.

Every Aquarius watercolor offers outstanding lightfastness — 7 or 8 on the Blue Wool Scale (the highest ratings). This ensures that artworks can retain their colors for over 100 years under proper museum-grade lighting conditions.

Each pan is filled and labeled by hand, produced in small batches to guarantee uncompromising quality and consistency. Every batch undergoes rigorous testing for properties such as flow, texture, viscosity, color strength, transparency, granulation, hue accuracy, and staining ability. The pigment in each color is ground to an optimal fineness for the best performance.

Labels are made from watercolor paper, hand-painted with the actual color, and include detailed information on lightfastness, transparency, granulation, and staining. This artisanal approach ensures that every Aquarius watercolor activates easily with water and provides a smooth, satisfying painting experience — whether working wet-on-wet or layering on dry paper.
