Sennelier oil pastels are the result of an extraordinary collaboration between one of the greatest artists of the 20th century – Pablo Picasso – and the Parisian manufacturer Sennelier, whose history dates back to 1887.
In 1949, Picasso approached Henri Goetz, a painter and close friend of the Sennelier family, with a request to create a medium that would combine the intensity of oil paint with the ease of drawing. The result was the creation of oil pastels, which remain among the finest in the world to this day.
Sennelier developed a unique formula based on the highest-quality pigments, pure synthetic binder, and mineral wax with a neutral pH. This composition gives the pastels their distinctive creamy, buttery texture, making them exceptionally smooth to apply, blend, and layer. Their velvety consistency allows them to glide effortlessly across the surface, ideal for drawing fine lines, covering large areas, and building rich, saturated layers of color.
Their softness makes them perfect for blending and smudging techniques – using fingers, tools, or blenders. They enable seamless tonal transitions, delicate shading, and painterly effects similar to oil painting. They can also be applied thickly for impasto techniques, creating expressive textures and depth. Suitable for paper, canvas, wood, metal, and even glass, they require no fixative and won’t crack, crumble, or fade over time.
With exceptional pigmentation, they deliver intense color, excellent coverage, and outstanding lightfastness (excluding metallic and fluorescent shades). The range includes over 120 shades – from classic tones to subtle pastels, greys, metallics, and iridescent colors developed in collaboration with artists from Europe and North America.
Each pastel is made in France with the craftsmanship and passion that have defined the Sennelier name for generations. They are the choice of artists who seek not only superior quality but also a tool that becomes a true extension of the hand and imagination.
The Sennelier Legacy
Sennelier was born in the heart of artistic Paris. Founded in 1887 by Gustave Sennelier – a chemist and art enthusiast – the brand was built on the idea of creating paints that met the highest expectations of painters. His shop, located near the Louvre on Quai Voltaire, quickly became a gathering place for artists from around the world.
From the beginning, Sennelier stood out with its dedication to color. Every pigment was carefully selected, and each formula developed with scientific precision and artistic sensitivity. Sennelier paints earned the admiration of renowned artists such as Cézanne, Gauguin, Degas, and Picasso, who remained a loyal customer and played a key role in the creation of the oil pastels.
Over the years, Sennelier expanded its range to include watercolors, inks, oil paints, acrylics, and pastels – always maintaining the highest quality and artisanal integrity. Today, the brand continues to honor its traditions while responding to the needs of contemporary artists. Sennelier remains a global symbol of color, creativity, and excellence in the art world.
