Sennelier watercolors are exceptional paints born out of a passion for color, light, and tradition. They allow the artist to witness colors shimmer, blend, and swirl beneath the brush, creating unique, vibrant effects. They embody the very essence of Impressionist painting — combined with the heritage and craftsmanship of one of France’s most respected art brands.
The formula is based on the finest pigments, natural Kordofan gum arabic, and honey, which gives the paints their unmatched luminosity, creamy consistency, and longevity. Honey — a symbol of light, healing, and harmony for centuries — not only serves as a natural preservative in Sennelier watercolors, but also intensifies color, enhances smoothness, and extends the life of the paint film.
These watercolors are made using traditional methods refined over more than a century. Before being combined with honey and gum arabic, pigments are soaked for 24 hours in purified, mineral-free water to improve cohesion and ensure a consistent color base. The pigment paste is then ground slowly with stone mills at low temperatures to preserve the brilliance of the pigments and ensure a silky, uniform texture. The result is a smooth, rich watercolor that flows beautifully, enables seamless gradients, and creates perfect glazes.
Among the 110 colors in the L’Aquarelle Sennelier range, 36 are granulating shades, designed to reveal visible pigment texture on paper. Granulation is highly valued by many contemporary artists for adding depth, texture, and an organic character to artwork — especially in landscapes, botanical studies, and abstract compositions. These granulating colors use heavier pigments like cobalt, cadmium, and natural earths, which settle into the paper's texture as they dry. All granulating shades in the range are clearly marked with a “G” on the back of the tube, allowing artists to easily identify and incorporate them intentionally in their work.
L’Aquarelle Sennelier is made to meet the expectations of modern artists — vivid, luminous, and a pleasure to work with. The colors blend effortlessly, allow for subtle tonal variations, and invite painters to explore the interaction between pigment and paper light. Developed in collaboration with watercolorists around the world, tested and perfected through artist feedback, this line is ideal for any style, technique, or skill level. Sennelier watercolors offer the full experience of painting with light, movement, and color — just as the masters of Impressionism once did.
The Sennelier Legacy
Sennelier was born in the heart of artistic Paris. Founded in 1887 by Gustave Sennelier – a chemist and art enthusiast – the brand was built on the idea of creating paints that met the highest expectations of painters. His shop, located near the Louvre on Quai Voltaire, quickly became a gathering place for artists from around the world.
From the beginning, Sennelier stood out with its dedication to color. Every pigment was carefully selected, and each formula developed with scientific precision and artistic sensitivity. Sennelier paints earned the admiration of renowned artists such as Cézanne, Gauguin, Degas, and Picasso, who remained a loyal customer and played a key role in the creation of the oil pastels.
Over the years, Sennelier expanded its range to include watercolors, inks, oil paints, acrylics, and pastels – always maintaining the highest quality and artisanal integrity. Today, the brand continues to honor its traditions while responding to the needs of contemporary artists. Sennelier remains a global symbol of color, creativity, and excellence in the art world.
