The eco-friendly reusable fineliner The Wren Write Off by Tom’s Studio x Brothers Make is the winner of the Writing Instrument of the Year 2025 award at the Stationery Awards in London.

Every year, billions of plastic pens are thrown away – we wanted to do things differently. By collecting waste from local schools and organisations, we’ve reimagined what a pen can be: thoughtfully designed, built to last, and carefully crafted from reclaimed plastic. We work with local schools and organisations to collect used plastic pens and markers – saving them from landfill and starting their journey toward something better.

In their workshop, the incredible team at Brothers Make carefully sort, wash, and shred the plastic into colourful flakes – ready for transformation. Each pen lid is injection moulded, creating unique, one-of-a-kind pieces. Every lid is then finished by hand – this is small-batch production done right.

Wren is an elegant refillable writing pen equipped with a high-quality tip that ensures exceptional smoothness and comfort with every stroke. One full fill provides enough ink to write approximately 50 A4 pages.

It is a response to the disposable nature of everyday writing instruments. Designed to last for years, Wren can be refilled repeatedly with water-based inks (without shimmer or glitter particles), delivering beautifully smooth writing without compromise. It is a tool that combines functionality with a responsible, sustainable approach.

Each year, around 9 billion pens are thrown away worldwide. Most are designed as disposable products—convenient, but short-lived. This consumption model generates vast amounts of waste and limits access to durable, environmentally conscious alternatives. The designer, who has spent years handcrafting calligraphy and fountain pens for creatives around the world, repeatedly observed the same issue: perfectly functional, well-designed tools were discarded simply because they had run out of ink. That realisation became the inspiration behind Wren.
